V-day karaoke
So in the evening of V-day my hubby and I decided to hit a karaoke contest. From what I understood, the top three finishers would qualify for a final state round to contend for a shot at singing at WE Fest. I had a hard time picking a song, and once I settled on one I found out that another contestant was already singing it so I switched to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin". I love to jam to that song and I sounded "ok" when I performed it. I wasn't the best. I concentrated a lot on the stage presence and didn't pay too much attention to the vocals. But that's ok, I tried something different :) Anyone who was there can say I sounded like crap and I'm fine with that. lol I know I didn't sound the best in the world, but hey I tried and hit some key notes. But then again I got some positive comments from spectators that were there and so I guess it's just how you want to see it. You can view it negatively or positively :) I opt to view things positively. So anyways I ended up taking second, won a shot at the state round and a $25 gift certificate for the bar which I redeemed by buying the table some beverages. (I kept saying to everyone that "I had fun" and that's really what I believe it's all about.) First place was 2 tickets to WE Fest and honestly, we probably wouldn't have used them or went anyways. (We are going to try and attend the Indigenous Games that weekend) So it all worked out for everyone involved. I did, however, think that the cowboy who sang first would've won it. He nailed his song and had the stage presence. The gal that won did a good job and was decent as well so I'm not going to hate. I was pretty much laughing, smiling and having a good time most of the night, dancing to the other contestants' songs and so I was indeed having fun :) I tried convincing others who were at my table to give the competition a shot, you know just for the hell of it because I've heard both of them rock the mic before (Em and big sis ;) and I like the way they sing.
Open book tabulations were announced and welcomed and so I went to check it out, mainly out of curiosity to see how the judging was done. I found out that even though I picked out a challenging song, that I could've picked out an easy piece and probably scored better. But oh well, it's not like it was American Idol or anything hahahahaha I was/am happy with a 2nd place finish. It was a matter of me understanding how things were being run and I'm glad I got to visit and gain a better understaning :) I wasn't being sore to the head judge I was like "Oh ok, cool! Thank You!".
I just did that to give it a shot and see what it was all about. You never know if you don't try and don't knock it if ya don't try it is what I believe :) I love to sing and it's like p-wow dancing, doesn't matter when or where...I'll do it :) Ok ok so I don't openly sing as much as I openly dance but it's ok. I know not everyone is going to like the way I sing or dance and maybe they'll even try to hate but oh well...can't please everyone right? I shook peoples' hand and said they did well, with the exception of the gal who won (she headed out shortly after the contest winners were announced.) It was good to see other natives singing, let alone getting the nerve to compete :) And I conveyed that. Too many times, I notice our people hating on each other and stuff and I think that's sad. I think we should be happy to for each other. Even when I congratulated one of the gals, she gave me a look like "Get the eff away". But oh well I'd rather be positive than negative :)
I don't know if I'll take it to the next level and pursue the state competition, chances are I'll be busy with school anyways or maybe off to a powwow but it was a fun lil experience that I'll remember my V-day 2008 by :)
So there you have it, the honest truth, and the main thing is I had fun. I just hope others had fun as well! :)
