Last night, the lil'est, cutest, junior girls traditional dancer spent the night at my place and we had a really nice time enjoying the weather and beauty in this world. Went for an evening stroll and stopped by a park, then went to a gas station where the dumb ass clerk automatically assumed I was using EBT as that was the first question out of his mouth. It's not that I was offended at the content of the question, I have nothing against people who use EBT but I highly doubt that would've been the first question if Shnaazh and I would've walked in with pale skin, blond hair and blue eyes. Now I'm thinking, what could have been a wise ass, classy comment to shoot back? lol
Well he did try to smooth things over and make small talk after I gave him a weird look and said "no" and said "Oh are you on a walk tonight?" I should have smart assedly commented back "Actually we're halfway where we need to be. See that sign across the way that says "Lakeside Liquors"? Well I'm going to spend the rest of the change I was begging for in the Walmart parking lot on a bottle of whiskey."
Would've been worth it to see the look on his face. Ha!
Instead I kept my cool, stayed in my usual pleasant state and told him we were out enjoying the evening. I wasn't going to let something like that ruin that marvelous evening my niece and I just had.
Next time, I don't think I'll be as easygoing. Maybe go into a smart ass Janeane Garofalo mode.
I miss my friend Lori that used to work there. She moved to Grand Forks and is going to UND in the fall.
My mood was a bit dampened after that, but didn't stay that way for long as I watched my niece run to the loons by the lake shore. Then we walked to the stone stairs and she ate the ice cream I bought her at the gas station. After that we walked along the lake side street, making our way back to my place. Lo and behold who did I see out for an evening stroll? One of my former English professors, "Hello" he said to me in his semi-British accent. Everyone always used to snicker at that, but I always thought it was kind of neat especially in his Shakespeare, Milton and Brit. Lit. classes where he'd eloquently read us the passages in his accent. He comes from the east coast and I guess he did live in the UK at one point.
We ended the evening and night, watching Phantom of the Opera with Shnaazh wanting to sing along with all the songs =)
